Chapters Transcript Video When to Refer Patients to Vascular Surgery Sadaf S. Ahanchi, MD, highlights when it is appropriate for a primary care provider to refer a vascular patient for additional intervention. My name is Sadie Hachi. I'm one of the vascular surgeons for Sentara vascular specialists. And my practice is mostly focused in Suffolk Virginia. Primary care doctors will refer patients to us that say come to their office with preferential disease. So lower extremity communication pain when they walk. Um Sometimes they come in with diabetic foot ulcers or just ulcers in general a lot of times primary care physicians will order the appropriate arterial studies, ultrasounds diagnosed the ph D. And then send the patients to us. So that's frequently the type of patients we get referred. In addition to that routine screening for aneurysms patients over the age of 65 With or without a family history. Their entry into um the Medicare package um usually entails an ultrasound of the abdomen to check for an aneurysm and any aneurysms over the size of 3.5 centimeters. They can send to us and we can start to surveillance them every year with an ultrasound that way they have a vascular surgeon established um initially and then things like karate disease patients that are incidentally found to have some narrowings on ultrasound because their primary listens to their neck and here's a brewing or an abnormal sound gets an ultrasound. They see some narrowing. Those patients frequently will get sent to us again for surveillance and then you know surgery if needed. And then a lot of venus disease patients. So patients with varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, even ulcers. Um Starting from just cosmetic concerns all the way up to wound care concerns and all those patients will get vascular ultrasounds of their veins to see what's going on with their venus system and then treatment is necessary. So those are the typical types of patients that we get referred to us that we can take very good care of.
